Missional Minute
"Even so, land and people have suffered together, as invariably they must. Under the rule of industrial economics, the land, our country, has been pillaged for the enrichment, supposedly, of those humans who have claimed the right to own or exploit it without limit. Of the land community much has been consumed, much has been wasted, almost nothing has flourished. But this has not been inevitable. We do not have to live as if we are alone." - Wendell Berry, It All Turns on Affection. The promise of the Revelation is that the whole world will be swept up into glory; renewed and transfigured by the goodness of God. And yet, we are confronted with threats of evil, witnessing the brokenness and trauma. How long will evil dream up acts of defiance? Why is this even possible? Our God is so not like that. God is good and kind, longsuffering and merciful. In Lent, we remember that we are dust and to dust we shall return. But humanity is more than dust, we are God breathed dirt, made in the image of a relational loving God. Now is the time to pay attention to our God breathed humanity. To pay attention to the dust that blankets the flicker of the divine in our lives and relationships. Have we become captive to small dreams we can accomplish, seduced by a way that is average? Instead of being invigorated by Jesus who is two forces of equal measure — fully God and fully man — defining what it is to be a person fully alive. David Chang in Eat a Peach says, “a bowl of rice is bland. A chili relish is too salty and spicy to eat alone. Eaten together they’re perfect.”(209) Fully God and Fully Man coming together in Jesus is humanity in person fully realized. This Lent may the Breath of God blow the dust of our image[inations], becoming the body of Christ, authoring God’s story of being a community fully alive. |
Missional Coaching
The Missional Coaches are excited to bring you workshops - especially now that we are able to come in person. We have a foundational workshop which gives the background and helps to understand the history and how that affects our perceptions. Then there are more specific workshops after that, including: Missional Organization Structures Missional Community Missional Youth and Children Missional Small Groups Sharing our Personal Faith Missional Communication We would love to come and work with you as a parish to see how you are already being missional, and how we can support you in small ways to consider a new mindset about becoming more missional. Please contact the Diocese Office to set up a time to chat about your missional goals and book your workshop! |
