Missional Minute
Our Diocesan Vision Statement: To be a church that is inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit; a church that reflects the virtue and grace of Jesus; a church reaching out to proclaim God's love to a broken world. The early church’s missional embodiment was a recognition of the call to join in God’s ongoing mission in the world. To be baptized into Christ’s death and resurrection is to be immersed in Christ’s ongoing work in the world. Evan Howard reminds us that “the term mission was used originally in Christian theology to speak of God’s sending the Son and the Spirit... This missio dei (Latin, ‘mission of God’) is the foundation of all Christian Missions today” (Howard 2018, 198). The church’s mission in the world is a participation in the missional activity of the Spirit of God. Thus, the church embodies outward mission, not as a prescribed list of activities or functions, but as a response to God’s invitation to join the ongoing work of reconciliation. |

St. Edmund, Calgary: St. Edmunds sends a huge Thank You to our Anglican Community! Last fall we put out an appeal for food and funds to support our Food Bank and then an extra Appeal to help us with the increased costs for our participation in Spinz Around (one of our grocery suppliers) The response has been amazing! Thanks to a couple of anonymous donors, we have reached our goal to pay for the 2020 Spinz Around fee as well as transportation costs. A number of parishes did food drives for us as well as passing along financial donations from their parish members. This influx of generosity has helped us to provide 139 Christmas hampers to over 400 people including children and has left us stocked up for at least the month of January. We have said it before but it bears saying again – we cannot fulfill our mission “Serving Christ and Community” without your help! Thank you for supporting us, and by extension, hundreds of people in need! We also do appreciate your ongoing support throughout the year and not just at Christmas time. If you are interested in doing a drive for us or volunteering in the Food Bank itself, please give us a call at (403) 288-6330 or email us at email@stedmundscalgary.org. Looking to get rid of Christmas ‘Stuff’? St. Edmunds is now collecting gently used Christmas decorations, household décor, giftware, toys, etc. Christmas items are sorted and stored until our Christmas Bazaar (November 14 this year) and other household items are set aside for our June Garage Sale (June 20th). If it’s clean and in good condition, we’ll take it! (no furniture or clothing please). We are open for drop off during Food Bank hours of Mondays and Thursdays 9:00-11:30 or by appointment (call (403) 288-6330). By the way – did you know that we also accept donations of vintage, antiques, and collectibles?? We advertise and sell these special items on Kijiji and raise funds for the upkeep of Critchley Mission Hall which houses our Food Bank and Christmas Hamper program area. Donations of these types of special items are very much appreciated! |

Refugee Support Groupof the Anglican Diocese of Calgary The Refugee Support Group is looking for sponsors to help with the following refugee family. Family size: 3, Country of Origin: Iraq, language(s) spoken: Kurdish A 37-year-old Iraqi mother and her two children arrived in early 2019 in Calgary accompanied by her brother and his family. Due to her traumatic background, and because she is a single parent in a new and unfamiliar environment, the mother struggles with raising her children. The mother is highly dependent on her brother for emotional support as he is the only male in the household. The mother also worries for the well-being of family members they were forced to leave behind in Iraq. A sponsor could provide the family with the assistance they need to reduce their feelings of isolation and loneliness. The sponsor could assist the mother in accessing resources in the community which will increase her overall independence and confidence. For more information on sponsorship contact the refugee support group by email at anglicancalgaryrefugee@gmail.com Andre Visscher, Refugee Ministry Coordinator of the Anglican Diocese of Calgary |
